JB's Restaurant

JB's Restaurant is a chain of family style restaurants. They list 15 restaurants in 5 states.

The company was started in 1961 by Jack Broberg. Mr. Broberg bought a Big Boys franchise in 1963 and the company expanded as JB Big Boys. The company had 18 restaurants in 1970 when it moved its headquarters to Salt Lake City.

The company went public in 1972 and expanded into Arizona by buying Big Boys franchises in 1974. They purchased "The Old Salt City Jail" in 1980.

The company struggled through tough markets in the 1980s. To turn things around they created an employee education program, diversified its menu from standard Big Boy menu by adding charbroiled foods and salad bars. In the mid 1980s, JB's decided to break from the Big Boy chain completely. They sold the Old City Jail Restaurant. They changed the company name to JB Restaurants and split from Big Boys in 1988.

The company experimented with different franchises including Sbarros, HomeTown Buffet and Galaxy Diner.

By 1995, the company had grown to 107 restaurants. To reflect the new brands, the company changed its name to "Summit Family Restaurants Inc." That same year, they received a buyout offer from CKE Restaurants (owners of Carl's Junior).

In 1997, CKE spun off its HomeTown Buffet restaurants to Star Buffet. Some of these stores reverted to the "JB's Restaurant" brand.

CKE mixed things around. In 1998 CKE sold "JB Restaurants" to Santa Barbara Restaurant Group.

In 2000 Santa Barbara sold its JB Restaurants to a group led by investors and store managers. The new company had 59 company owned restaurants and 29 franchises. Their headquarters were in Tempe.

The new JB's Restaurant filed for bankruptcy in 2011. the company emerged with just 15 restaurants. Many are owned and operated by Star Buffet.
